More From My Conversation with Jason Harris on How to Boost Your Persuasion Skills

Jason Harris stumbled onto the path of brand storytelling with an unlikely influence; a rock and roll band named Kiss. As a young teenager, Jason found himself drawn to the world of Kiss, immersing himself in their extensive merchandise, from comic books to concerts, and even joining the Kiss Army.

Unknowingly, this was Jason’s first real taste of the power behind branding and storytelling. Subconsciously, he understood the attraction of a brand that told a captivating story, knew its values and wasn’t afraid to stand out. It was a lesson that would shape his career in the advertising industry.

Later, as a father, Jason tried to share this passion with his kids by taking them to a Kiss concert. However, they weren’t quite as captivated as their father had been at their age, leaving after only five songs. But, for Jason, it was an amusing full-circle moment that brought him back to his roots.

The second pivotal moment in Jason Harris’s journey came when he co-founded an advertising agency. The decision to divide the company’s equity equally amongst the four founders was a nod to the structure of his favorite band, U2. This turned out to be a decision that sustained the company through both highs and lows, fostering a sense of fairness and mutual support.

Jason also found himself at a crossroads when he agreed to work on a public service campaign addressing sexual assault on college campusesโ€”the project, inspired by a call from the Obama administration, aimed to promote bystander intervention. While the subject matter was difficult, the campaign dubbed “It’s On Us” was a success, reminding Jason of the power of storytelling to influence and inspire change. Through these experiences, Jason learned to weave emotion, simplicity, consistency, and community involvement into his narratives, creating a winning formula for impactful storytelling.
