Why Resilience Alone Isnโt Enough โ And What It Really Takes to Become Shatterproof
For years, we’ve been told that resilience is the ultimate goalโthe ability to bounce back, endure, and power through lifeโs challenges. But as organizational psychologist and bestselling author Dr. Tasha Eurich explains in her groundbreaking new book Shatterproof, that narrative is not only outdatedโitโs dangerously incomplete.
In her compelling conversation with Passion Struck host John R. Miles, Eurich unpacks three pervasive myths of resilience that have quietly infiltrated our cultural mindset. The first myth? That resilience guarantees thriving. In reality, as Eurich and Miles explore, the science tells a more sobering story: resilience helps us surviveโbut rarely does it help us grow. At best, it gets us back to baseline. It doesnโt build the next version of ourselves.

The second myth is that resilience is fully under our control. While itโs true we can strengthen resilience over time, Eurich emphasizes that many people start from vastly different baselines. Factors like trauma, chronic illness, and systemic adversity all influence how much resilience we can access.
The notion that resilience is simply a matter of willpower leads to what she calls โgrit gaslightingโโthe false belief that if youโre struggling, itโs your fault for not meditating more, journaling harder, or thinking positively enough. Miles shares his own personal experience navigating burnout and internalized pressure, reinforcing how common and costly this mindset can be.
The third myth? That adversity inherently makes us stronger. โWhat doesnโt kill you makes you strongerโ sounds inspiringโbut it isnโt supported by research. As Eurich and Miles discuss, ongoing stress without proper tools and support actually depletes our emotional and cognitive reserves, making it harder to recover over time.
Thatโs where Shatterproof offers a breakthrough. Eurich outlines a proactive framework for growthโher four-step roadmap: Probe Your Pain, Trace Your Triggers, Spot Your Shadows, and Pick Your Pivots. Rather than waiting for life to knock us down and hoping weโll bounce back, she and Miles advocate for intentionally leveraging adversity as a catalyst for transformation.
Ultimately, Eurichโs messageโand Milesโs guiding insightโremind us that true strength isnโt about stoicism or endurance. Itโs about self-awareness, psychological flexibility, and the daily choice to believe thatโeven through hardshipโa better way is possible.
