Transforming Workplace Culture Through Intentional Leadership with Jessica Kriegel
In this engaging episode of Passion Struck, Jessica Kriegel explains why, in the modern workplace, the importance of organizational culture cannot be overstated. It serves as the invisible thread that weaves together an organization’s beliefs, actions, and results. Jessica discusses why culture is often overlooked, yet it is integral to achieving a companyโs mission and goals. The interview emphasizes that culture is not merely a set of values or a mission statement but a collection of shared beliefs that influence employee behavior and, ultimately, organizational success. At the heart of this discussion is the assertion that intentional experiences shape organizational culture, leading to enhanced employee engagement and improved performance.
To understand how intentional experiences shape culture, it is essential to recognize the relationship between beliefs, actions, and results. Jessica introduces the “results pyramid,” which highlights that while results are the ultimate goal of any organization, they stem from actions taken by employees. However, it is crucial to note that actions are driven by employees’ beliefs about their work and the organization itself. Employees who believe their work is meaningful and valued are more likely to take actions that drive results. Conversely, their engagement and productivity will suffer if they feel unseen or irrelevant.
In this episode, youโll learn:
- The Culture Equation: Discover how aligning an organizationโs purpose, strategy, and culture can lead to significant revenue growth and employee satisfaction.
- Intentional Leadership: Understand the role of leaders as “chief repetition officers” who must consistently communicate the organization’s mission and values to shape a positive culture.
- Beliefs and Actions: Learn how shared beliefs within a team influence actions and ultimately drive results, emphasizing the need for leaders to focus on shaping these beliefs.
- Culture by design, not by default: Jessica discusses the need for intentional cultural design and how leaders can actively shape the work environment.
- Generational Stereotypes: Gain insights into the misconceptions surrounding generational differences in the workplace and how these stereotypes can hinder collaboration and understanding.
- Purpose Fit vs. Culture Fit: Explore the concept of purpose fit, which prioritizes alignment between personal and organizational values over traditional culture fit, fostering a more inclusive and effective workplace.

Cultural Fit vs. Cultural Add: Redefining Workplace Dynamics
During the fascinating conversation on the Passion Struck podcast, Jessica Kriegel explained the critical distinction between “cultural fit” and “cultural add.” These concepts are pivotal for creating an inclusive and dynamic workplace culture.
Cultural Fit typically refers to aligning an employeeโs values, beliefs, and behaviors with those of the organization. Traditionally, hiring practices focused on finding candidates who closely resemble the existing team, often leading to a homogenized work environment. While this approach can foster a sense of cohesion, it also risks stifling diversity, creativity, and innovation. When everyone shares similar backgrounds and perspectives, organizations may become blind to new ideas and solutions, ultimately limiting their growth potential.
In contrast, Cultural Add emphasizes the value of diversity and the unique contributions each individual can bring to the organization. This perspective recognizes that every employee has distinct experiences, skills, and viewpoints that can enrich the company culture. By prioritizing cultural add, organizations open themselves up to new ways of thinking and problem-solving, fostering an environment that encourages collaboration and creativity.
Jessica elaborated on this concept in her book Unfairly Labeled: How Your Workplace Can Benefit From Ditching Generational Stereotypes, where she challenged the stereotypes associated with generational differences in the workplace. She argues that embracing cultural diversity helps organizations break free from outdated assumptions and enables them to leverage the strengths of a diverse workforce.
By adopting a cultural add mindset, companies can create a more intentional workplace that values individuality and fosters a sense of belonging among employees. This shift enhances employee engagement and drives innovation, as diverse teams are better equipped to address complex challenges and seize new opportunities.
