My Tribute to Emile Bruneau

Emile Bruneau was a pioneering cognitive neuroscientist whose groundbreaking research focused on understanding the psychological roots of conflict and how empathy can be harnessed to foster peace. His work centered on the complex ways our brains respond to those we perceive as “others” and how these perceptions shape human conflict, from everyday disagreements to large-scale wars.

Emile’s journey into conflict research began in 1997 when he witnessed a small fight between two young boys in Belfast—one Catholic, one Protestant. What started as a simple disagreement rapidly escalated into a violent brawl, underscored by years of historical tensions. This moment was a catalyst for Emile, sparking a lifelong quest to understand the psychological forces that turn minor disagreements into destructive conflicts. He sought to answer a fundamental question: Why do we so easily slip into hostility when our group identities are threatened?

At the heart of Emile’s work was his exploration of cognitive biases, which he believed play a central role in how we perceive and respond to others. He studied in-group favoritism, the tendency to show more empathy toward people we identify as being like us, and how this creates an empathy gap that deepens divides. Emile also focused on dehumanization, which strips others of their humanity and makes it easier to justify violence or cruelty. He showed through his neuroimaging studies how our brains react differently when viewing members of out-groups, reducing activity in regions associated with empathy.

But Emile’s work was not only about diagnosing the problem—he dedicated his life to finding solutions. His research showed that empathy could be cultivated, even in the most entrenched conflicts. Through experiments on shared storytelling and perspective-taking, he demonstrated that these simple yet profound acts could reduce biases and build bridges of understanding. By encouraging people to step into the shoes of others, Emile Bruneau found that it was possible to shrink the empathy gap and challenge dehumanizing perceptions.

Emile’s commitment to translating his research into real-world impact was remarkable. He applied his empathy-based interventions in some of the world’s most conflicted regions, working with peacebuilding organizations in Israel and Palestine. He also addressed the refugee crisis, helping design programs that brought refugees and host communities together in meaningful interactions, fostering mutual understanding and countering dehumanizing narratives.

His legacy is one of hope and possibility. Emile’s work offers a roadmap for addressing the psychological roots of conflict in our personal lives, our communities, and globally. His belief that empathy, perception, and understanding can be powerful tools for peace is something I carry with me in my life’s work. Emile showed us that no matter how deep the divide, we can see each other’s humanity and, in doing so, create a more peaceful world.

Emile Bruneau’s legacy will continue to inspire those of us who are dedicated to reducing division and promoting understanding. He taught us that empathy is an ideal practical and powerful tool for conflict resolution. His life and work remind us that, at our core, we are more alike than different—and that recognizing this truth is the first step toward lasting peace.
