Lifestyle Choices Impact Genetic Predisposition
One of the key points Kara Collier and I discussed in the podcast is the impact of lifestyle choices on genetic predisposition. The analogy used is that genes load the gun, but our environment and habits pull the trigger. This means that while we may have a genetic predisposition for certain conditions or diseases, our lifestyle choices can greatly influence whether or not those genes are activated.
Kara emphasizes that genetic risk factors are not necessarily unchangeable. While we may inherit certain genes from our parents that increase our risk for certain conditions, it does not guarantee that we will develop those conditions. Instead, these genes increase our risk, and our lifestyle habits and environment determine whether or not those genes are expressed.
The analogy of a loaded gun is used to explain this concept. Our genes load the gun, giving us a predisposition for certain conditions. However, our habits and lifestyle choices pull the trigger, determining whether or not those genes are activated. This highlights the importance of paying attention to our lifestyle habits and making choices that promote good health.
Kara and I also discuss the misconception that genetic predisposition is deterministic, meaning that if we have certain genes, we are destined to develop certain conditions. However, this is not the case for the vast majority of genes. While there may be a few genes that are deterministic, most genes increase our risk for certain conditions. It is our lifestyle habits and environmental factors that can switch these genes on or off.
