Modern life promises us everything our ancestors could never imagine: comfort, freedom, security, and endless choice. Yet beneath this abundance, millions of people feel lonelier, more anxious, and more invisible than ever. Why does success so often leave us unfulfilled? Why does freedom without belonging quietly erode our happiness?
In this episode of Passion Struck, I sit down with psychologist and author William von Hippel to unpack The Social Paradox. Together, we explore why our two deepest evolutionary needs, autonomy and connection, have become dangerously unbalanced and how we can restore what truly makes life meaningful.
The Social Paradox: Autonomy, Connection, and What Makes Us Human
William von Hippel argues that human happiness depends on two evolutionary drives: our need for connection and our craving for autonomy. For most of history, these drives balanced one another. Our ancestorsโ survival depended on cooperation and constant feedback from their group, while rare opportunities for autonomy allowed them to discover their unique strengths.
Today, that balance has collapsed. Autonomy is everywhere, while connection is optional. In the interview, William explains how this imbalance fuels loneliness, erodes mattering, and leaves us chasing what he calls โsad success stories.โ He recalls visiting a wealthy friend who admitted he was no happier despite abundance. Later, when studying the Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania, William realized that people with almost nothing often report being happier than we are. Their daily contributions are seen, celebrated, and valued. They never wonder if they matter.
The conversation explores how autonomy was meant to serve connection, not replace it, and how modern life gets this relationship backwards. We discuss the pain of loneliness as an evolutionary warning system, the impact of smartphones and social media on young people, and the role of regret in shaping the choices we make. Most importantly, William shares practical ways to rebuild connection through intention, habit, and the courage to show up for the people who truly matter.

Autonomy feels like the ultimate prize, yet it was never meant to stand alone. It evolved to help us bring value to others, to strengthen the bonds that made survival possible. In our pursuit of freedom, we have confused the means with the end, mistaking independence for fulfillment. The truth, as William von Hippel reminds us, is simple. We do not thrive in isolation. We thrive when we matter to those around us, when our successes are shared, and when our lives are anchored in connection.
