How to build a personal legacy isn’t just a question for the end of your life; it’s something you answer every day, one quiet decision at a time.
In Episode 666 of Passion Struck, I explore what it really means to build a personal legacy not someday in the distant future, but right now, through the values we embody and the choices we make.
We often treat legacy like a final chapter. A reward for fame. A monument to success. But that view misses the point.
Legacy isn’t what happens after you’re gone. It’s what you’re living right now.
This post breaks down a practical model I call the C.H.O.I.C.E. method — six daily principles for building a legacy by design, not default.

Why Most People Think About Legacy the Wrong Way
Ask most people what legacy means, and you’ll hear answers like:
- The wealth you leave behind
- The business you built
- The reputation you earned
That’s the external version. But real legacy isn’t external.
It’s internal, built on how you treat people, what you protect, and how you live your values — especially when no one’s watching.
You don’t build a legacy by chance. You build a legacy by choice. – John R. Miles
The Bridge Metaphor: What Legacy Really Is
In Episode 666, I introduce a metaphor that reframes legacy:
Legacy isn’t a monument. It’s a bridge.
Not something you admire from afar, but something you walk across. Something others will walk across after you.
Some parts of that bridge may be inherited. But others, you build with your own hands — often while you’re still walking it.
So, how do we ensure we’re building the right kind of bridge?
That’s where the C.H.O.I.C.E. method comes in.
The C.H.O.I.C.E. Method: How to Build a Personal Legacy
This isn’t theory. It’s practice. It’s a model I created to guide intentional living and legacy leadership.
Each letter represents a daily decision point:
C = Courage
Speak truth. Take the step. Act with conviction — even when it’s uncomfortable.
H = Honor
Live by your values, not convenience. Treat your role and relationships with care.
O = Ownership
Lead your life. Don’t coast. Don’t blame. Say, “This is mine to shape.”
I = Integrity
Align your actions with your values — especially when it costs you something.
C = Contribution
Invest in something beyond yourself. Uplift others. Build for the future.
E = Endurance
Keep showing up. Keep choosing. Even when it’s hard. Especially then.
These six choices, repeated consistently, are how you build a legacy that lasts — not through applause, but through alignment.
Why This Matters Now More Than Ever

In my conversation with evolutionary psychologist William von Hippel (also featured in this episode), we discuss how humanity didn’t evolve through dominance or raw intellect, but through cooperation and connection.
In other words, we survived because we mattered to each other.
That drive to live a life that matters still runs deep in our wiring.
And yet, in today’s hyper-independent culture, many of us forget that legacy isn’t built alone. It’s built in community. Through shared values. Through the people we lift up along the way.
Which is why I created the C.H.O.I.C.E. method — to turn instinct into intention. To help you shift from chasing success to building significance.
Final Reflection: What Are You Building?
The truth is, you’re already leaving a legacy.
The only question is: Are you building it by design or by default?
So ask yourself:
- Where do I need to choose courage over comfort?
- What values have I been compromising?
- Who am I lifting up, and who could I be?
Because every day is a chance to lay another plank on that bridge.
