“The thing about addiction that really becomes the thing is this belief that I can’t do anything else. I’m never going to do anything useful or important or interesting because this thing owns all of me.”

Sensitivity, Creativity, and the Battle Between the Good and Bad Wolf: Understanding Addictionโ€™s Deeper Roots

During this inspiring Passion Struck Podcast interview, Eric Zimmer, behavior coach and host of The One You Feed, explored the deep connection between sensitivity, creativity, and vulnerability to addiction.

The One You Feed by Eric Zimmer for Passion Struck recommended podcasts

He highlighted how individuals who are highly sensitive and creative often experience intense emotions, making them more prone to addiction as a means of coping with their overwhelming inner world. Creativity, while a strength, can sometimes intensify feelings of isolation, anxiety, and emotional turmoil, leading to unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Rather than viewing sensitivity and creativity as weaknesses that lead to addiction, Eric encouraged reframing them as strengths that can be harnessed for positive change. When channeled correctly, these traits allow individuals to develop deeper empathy, foster meaningful relationships, and contribute valuable insights to the world.

Eric also shared the Cherokee parable of the good and bad wolf, which beautifully illustrates the internal battle we face in moments of struggle. In the story, a young boy asks his grandfather which wolf will winโ€”the good one or the bad one. The grandfather answers, โ€œThe one you feed.โ€ Eric connected this metaphor to addiction, explaining that the choices we make daily determine which aspects of ourselves we nurtureโ€”either self-destructive behaviors or habits that lead to healing and growth.

By recognizing the fight within, Eric emphasized that we have the power to choose which “wolf” we feed, shifting from harmful patterns toward positive habits like mindfulness, community support, and emotional resilience. Through conscious decision-making, sensitive and creative individuals can transform their vulnerabilities into strengths, leading to a healthier, more fulfilling life.
